OUGD602 - Amsterdam Thank You Cards

To say thank you to the people who took the time to talk to us for our Clunk Collective project, we made thank you cards to send to them. They were screen printed, appropriately for our Collective's purpose. I will continue to keep these contacts close to maximise the possibility and potential for Clunk, and to keep options open for my own career.

OUGD602 - Degree Show Instagram Takeover

Because of my role as a Student Ambassador, I have been given the opportunity to take part in an Instagram Takeover in the lead up to the End of Year Show, using the University's Instagram feed.

This will be a good opportunity to give myself some promotion and show of my work and the course.

OUGD602 - PPP Presentation

I used my PPP presentation as an opportunity to explore the development in my personal practice and my professional strategy in the last year. The presentation focussed on what briefs I had undertaken and what I had learnt from them, and what skills I had developed through PPP sessions and how they benefitted my professional practice.

OUGD602 - Pentagram and Atlas Contact

I emailed both Pentagram and Atlas asking for portfolio feedback and the opportunity of taking part in an internship.

I had sent Christmas cards to both studios in the hopes that it would establish a connection, and followed them up with an email. Both studios are hard to strike up a conversation and so I will have to apply more of what I have learnt in PPP sessions.

They are still studios I want to experience working with so I will not give up in my attempt to make a connection.

OUGD602 - Abbie Moakes

Today, Abbie Makes, who graduated from LAU two years ago, came in to talk about her experience once she graduated. It was incredibly constructive to hear her experience as the same is coming close for myself. Her visit boosted my confidence in the lead up to my own graduation, and helped me realise it is okay to take time before taking a job, to figure out exactly where I am best suited.

In her experience, she would of liked to take a little more time after graduation and have some space during the transition into a career so that she could of figured out exactly where she wanted to be. That space can be constructive and can prevent you from falling into a job that isn't suited for you.

She suggested getting as much freelance work as possible before settling into a career, as once it kicks off, there won't be as much free time to work on projects you have chosen, and ones that you would enjoy experimenting with and having more control. This can help to build up your portfolio and it is constructive to interact with portfolio reviews which will strengthen them and increase your chances of getting a job.

When looking for a job, LinkedIn is a good port of call to find jobs as there are new job listings posted everyday and it is easy to grow a network. It is important in interviews to ask what the turnover is within a studio, how long will designers usually stay in that job and how far they progress in the company.

This advice is incredibly useful and has increased my confidence in graduating as it has reminded me it is okay to not know what you want to do and to take some time to make sure you are taking the correct route.

OUGD602 - Interacting With Professional Printers

For a current Extended Practice brief, I have been in touch with professional printers to find silk screen printers.

It has been constructive to find printers that use this process as it is a process I frequently use and I can start to grow a network of trusted printers for when I am completing work after University.
