In a lecture called, be a sponge, we learnt
all about different creative tools that we could use as inspiration. To start
with in a small task group we created a list of the tools that we all use on a
daily basis. This included Behance, Pinterest, Instagram, Its Nice That, the
Creative Review and The Art Form. We also named lots of sources that weren’t
necessarily graphics orientated, such as the BBC news, directors such as
Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, programs such as grand designs. Other
sources we thought we found inspirational were musical things such as
SoundCloud, gigs and festivals.
After brainstorming ideas we then presented
them to other small groups. I found this incredibly useful as it gave me more
sources, that other people use it also made me realise there’s lots of artistic
areas around Leeds. There are many bars and cafes that are styled in an
artistic way.
Places and tools I learnt about that I had
not considered using as inspirational tools:
Its Nice That
An online art magazine that often reviews graphic design as well as art. This is a useful website to visit if you're looking for inspiration or just an interesting read. It often reviews pieces of work as well as current news about the world of art and design. A website that before this task I did not consider visiting regularly but now I definitely do.
Creative Review
An online art
Creative Review
Another online art magazine that reviews work and topical news articles. Just like Its Nice That, I did not consider visiting this site but I have found its interesting just to browse and have a little look at from time to time.
National Geographic
National Geographic is a magazine which focuses on the topic of nature, geography, history and world culture. I started following their Instagram page, however their online magazine is useful, their Instagram is truly inspirational and they post some stunning photography that triggers my curiosity.

Headrow House
A stylized bar in Leeds, Headrow House's flyers, posters and house style have all been thought out. The design is consistent and minimalist and gives the bar a great atmosphere. I never even considered this place as a house of inspiration, however after my first visit I truly did feel as though I had experienced something new and I can see it will have a big impact on me for my future work.

Village Book Store
A bookstore in the Corn Exchange, this place has a unique atmosphere and is full of books that can be hugely influential. There is inspiration in every book. Even if you're just having a browse.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park
I recently took a visit to the sculpture park and it was a nice escape from the city. It was nice to get back into the countryside. This visit influenced a studio task I had a week to complete and it was also good to just go for a stroll around the park. The sculptures and the views of the Yorkshire country side is definitely something that inspires.
Having an Instagram account myself I can't think of a time when I'm not on it scrolling through my feed. I have found many inspirational artists, designers and studios that post some amazing work regularly. Just scrolling through can be inspirational and gradually influence my own work. Within the task I found more accounts to follow such as: natgeo, thedesigntip, paul_heys and acmprints.
Leeds Print Festival
An annual event, I have not visited yet but I intend to next year. This event will be inspirational just to browse or even buy prints that might catch my eye. As a graphic designer I always have time to appreciate a good screen print.
Secret 7
Secret 7 is an art and music event that takes place annually. Each year, 7 tracks from 7 of the worlds best musicians are picked and turned into 7" vinyls. Creatives from around the world are then picked to listen to the music and create sleeves for the piece of music. 700 vinyls and sleeves are then sold anonymously and its a mystery as to what track you have bought which is where the secret lies. This event is fascinating and mysterious and the end result peculiar, you will have chosen the piece of music based on your preference of style in art. This is an event that I want to take part in and I find album art very inspirational.

Colours May Vary
A store similar to the Village Book Store, Colours May Vary sells a variety of screen prints, a variety of art, books, magazines and work as well as different pieces of designed products. This is a good place to browse and eventually you will find inspiration in a piece and perhaps buy it if it catches your eye.
