OUGD402 - Self Branding Research - Packaging Design

I have looked into many different styles of packaging and picked out the style of packaging design that appeals to me. I have brought together a number of images of different variations of this style to inspire me when I create my own. This style of design is the one I would like to go into the industry and design, so its important that I attract clients that enjoy this aesthetic as well.

Much of the packaging thats used in this particular style is quite traditional. Small glass bottles with metal screw top lids hold beard oil and metal tins are used to hold hair products such as pomade or wax. These tins are shallow and have screw tops. This material is durable however metal can be known to bend. Plastic tubs have also been used which is less likely to bend but could crack. Some products even use deep jars with metal lids, similar to the bottles. This gives a traditional aesthetic using old style materials, however, sometimes new style packaging can mix with old style to create and interesting contemporary style. The plastic packaging with old style design of labels looks interesting and brings the old style design into a contemporary style that doesn't look outdated.

There is a mixture of materials that are used to produce the labels, many of which include organically coloured stock. There is a range of thin card and sticky labels, which is often textured. The colours compliment the packaging material using pastel toned colours. Minimal colour is used however and the stock chosen is often what gives the packaging colour. Often the label has been printed on but there are some examples of embossing. The printing varies and the style of ink makes it look as though it has been printed with a press.

Sometimes illustration is included in the labelling, however it is very minimal. Often icons are used subtly. This is because pattern is a prominent feature in this style of packaging. There is a heavy use of typography on the packaging in many different styles. Old style typography is popular with this style of packaging, however in the style that looks more contemporary, sans-serif type is included to give it a contemporary style.

These techniques are all techniques that I wish to experiment on when I design my own packaging.
