OUGD402 - Studio Brief 02 - Self Branding Evaluation

To start this module, I first established my own style and the field of design I want to pursue. My favourite area of design is packaging, so I wanted to communicate this to potential clients. For this project I conducted lots of research into the particular style of packaging that I want to design. I spent a long time researching type faces, packaging materials and colour. In this project I stayed organised and kept on top of my work and ensured that I attended every PPP lecture session and kept on top of the work I had to produce for the module.

My practice in this project was incredibly personal. I focussed on my own style and used this to brand myself and create my identity. The end result produced promotional material that is different from typical business cards making my project individual and innovative. To ensure my designs were thoughtful and informed, I conducted plenty of research into every aspect of packaging in the style and tone of voice that suits my identity and me as an individual. This style of packaging is an area of design that i wish to pursue.

My final idea was to brand a hair product and design the packaging and send it to potential clients and studios. This will showcase my work and when my clients and studios see the packaging they will understand the care and attention I take in my design decisions. My design has developed throughout the project and with feedback I managed to fine tune my designs to create an engaging composition. I almost went down the route of skeuomorphism, but avoided this technique due to its controversy. Many designers arestrongly against this style of design as it's not original or innovative. I produced more research which informed my designs to be modern and not pretending to be something they weren't. Over the course of the brief, my printing technique developed, allowing me to determine which materials would create the most effective prints.

My designs are in keeping with the barber culture, trend and style, and my printing methods and use of glass containers hold the tone of voice I am communicating. I took a lot of care and time in designing, cutting and printing my packaging and I am proud of the end result, its some of the best work I've produced. The quality of the stock, combined with the quality of the glass jars have produced a fantastic end result which perfectly communicates my identity and forms a professional and sophisticated product. However, I should have ordered the jars sooner as the label designs almost didn't fit because I had to work with the measurements and specifications I received when I ordered them. However the design still fits and looks professional.

The final design is engaging and naturally creates a texture. Printing on an organic stock added to the texture which is produced through using a traditional print process. This texture was produced naturally and not deliberately which is more aesthetically pleasing than producing the texture myself, which is what I initially thought about doing. My design decisions were well informed after I had produced a substantial body of research and overall, this made my finished piece well presented. I glue mounted the label onto the jar which looks neat andprofessional, and produced a wrapper for the jars that holds my contact information and a link to my portfolio. This delivers information in a way that is engaging and doesn't distract from the actual product. I filled my jars with hair product and photographed my products in the studio.

I enjoyed laser cutting my designs the most as This is a process I have never experimented with and it was interesting to learn a new skill. I enjoyed printing my designs and was satisfied with the results. This is a technique I can use in the future and will push myself to experiment with more. The stock I used was incredibly successful. Using recycled paper suited the tone of voice that I was trying to communicate and best represents my ideals and ideology.

I am incredibly happy with my final design and feel it is the best work I have completed on the course so far. It has proved to me that undergoing plenty of research and using this to inform my designs results in a successful end result. I look forward to taking this concept further and using it to promote myself and even find work placements over summer.
