This episode of Section D was incredibly interesting and topical as they interviewed american designer Lance Wyman, who created the visual identity for the 1968 Mexico Olympics. It is topical because I have just completed a task creating pictograms for an Olympic sport. It was interesting and backed up the idea of having to do thorough research before completing a piece of design work. Wyman learnt a lot about Mexico during his design and he learnt a lot about cultural branding. When branding you must play on the obvious element and not the stereotyped element.
This interview is topical as well because Wyman talked about branding a culture and I am starting to look into branding for the OUGD402 module. I learnt that to avoid a stereotype you have to go and "see whats there" and make discoveries as they are helpful towards this work and will create successful design work and will not offend a culture by drawing on the stereotype.
