OUGD502 - Berlin

A selection of students in second year are going on a constructive visit to Berlin, including myself. I have done a small amount of research to find places of interest that I can see and will benefit my own practice.

Deutsche KinemathekThe film museum displays the history and development of film from its birth to the development of special effects. It demonstrates its role within Germany and it's cultural legacy through a variety of memorabilia. As I am keen to have a career in film production this visit will no doubt benefit my own practice and understanding of prop and set design.

Berlin U-Bahn
I am interested in seeing as much of the U-Bahn as I can. It is well known for its artistic stations and those that contest each other with such a variety in design. Each station was designed in a different age and represents Germany's design ethos through the eras.

East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery holds the last of the Berlin Wall which displays a variety of murals. As I am keen on Cold War history it is an artefact that I have always wanted to see.

Checkpoint Charlie
As well as the remains of the Berlin Wall, I am keen to see checkpoint charlie. I have been interested in Cold War history for a long time and it will also benefit my Context of Practice as I am creating a piece of prop design for a spy novel who's opening scene takes place in Checkpoint Charlie itself.

DDR Musem
To complete a history tour, I am interested in seeing the DDR museum to find out more about East Berlin. This visit will also benefit my context of practice in order to fully understand the mood of the time and create successful prop deign.

In Berlin there are a few studios and designers that I already follow and know of. They have all been involved in projects that I am particularly interested in. 1919 Studio and Studio Hausherr are both based in Berlin and potential places I could go and visit. Their work has been influential to me and my own practice and creating contacts in Berlin would create opportunity to work in Europe.
